As part of our travel, food and lifestyle blog, the team at Le Nautique will be seeking out the island’s favourite foodie haunts and generally eating our way around the Seychelles.

This week is the first instalment of our “Cheap Eats” series where we seek out the best tasty local eats that don’t cost the earth.

Today we’re at “Bazar Labrin”, the colourful food and craft market at Beau Vallon beach open every Wednesday from 4:30pm- 9pm.

 

Sample some of the best local delicacies, tasty tropical cocktails, fresh coconut water, breath-taking beach sunsets and rhythmic moutya (sega) dancing around the fire – a truly authentic Seychelles experience.

We start with these fresh and deliciously crisp local banana, yam and sweet potato chips – a great appetizer while you peruse the stalls for your next bite.

For mains you are spoilt for choice with numerous stalls selling fresh grilled fish, jerk chicken, traditional octopus curry, juicy sausages, skewers and chargrilled vegetables all sizzling away on primitive coal fired BBQs – the smell is just devine.

Thirsty? Grab a coconut water, freshly squeezed juice or a tasty cocktail if you’re in the mood for sundowners.

Be sure to find a perfect spot on the beach to watch the magical Beau Vallon sunset and enjoy your tasty market finds.

Stuart and I settled on traditional coconut octopus curry (sooo good) whilst Annalise and Will plumped for the chicken skewers and fried rice. The sunset was just magical as it sunk slowly below the warm Indian Ocean.

Once your bellies are full, head back to the market to watch the greatest highlight of the bazaar, a performance by a group of local musicians and dancers who play the traditional “moutya” music and dance around the camp fire.
