Packing for a Sunny Island Holiday

Last week we blogged about the various ways to reach the Seychelles and also how to best travel internally around our stunning jewel islands. This week we wanted to share with you our packing recommendations for an easy, stress-free tropical island holiday.

When it comes to the tropics, a capsule wardrobe is relatively straightforward. Without the need for layers, other than perhaps on the plane, all you will need are lightweight, neutral clothing options that mix and match well, linen evening ware, tried and tested footwear options, at least two swimsuits and a kaftan/sarong for easy poolside coverage.

Organic fabrics like linen, cotton, and hemp are your ultimate textiles for hotter weather because they breathe. They can be a throw-on casual piece, or dressed up with some antique jewellery to look super sophisticated. A wrinkled linen garment makes for casual, refined style and gives you an excuse to throw your iron out of the picture).

We recommend the following basic clothing items for an easy, stress-free tropical island holiday;

  • 5–7 lightweight t-shirts or sleeveless tops that can easily mix and match with different bottoms.
  • 2–3 pairs of shorts/skirts of varying lengths (avoid denim, as it takes a long time to line dry).
  • 2–3 pairs of lightweight pants / leggings or long airy dresses
  • 7 pairs of whatever underwear you find the most comfortable (cotton is best)
  • 2 pairs of thin socks
  • 1 pair of hiking or running shoes for exploring the lovely walking tracks here in the Seychelles
  • 1 pair of flip-flops or sandals – pick a versatile colour that can be wore day and night
  • 2 pairs of swimmers (swimsuits can take a little longer to dry in humid climates)
  • 1-2 kaftans or beach sarongs for easy coverage on the beach or by the pool

Further we also recommend;

  • Your essential toiletries and prescriptions to last the length of your trip
  • Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun
  • Roomy beach bag to house your towel, sunscreen, favourite book etc.
  • Waterproof phone casing, underwater camera or GoPro for epic beach selfies
  • Adapters and chargers for your favourite gadgets
  • Snorkelling gear  – we recommend full face masks like the “Tribord Easybreath”
  • Basic first aid kit for any minor cuts, stings, rashes etc.

Excess baggage can be expensive these days, so be sure to pack light and leave room in your case to bring home some local trinkets and mementos of your beautiful beach holiday (a bottle of Takamaka rum, some local Vanilla Tea and handmade souvenirs are a must!!).

What are your favourite go-to travel items? We’d love to hear your packing recommendations – especially if they are not listed above. Sharing is caring after all.

Until next week readers…..
